Balancing Your Radiators for Even Heat

Balancing controls how much hot water flows to each radiator so that ones near the boiler don't hog the heat while distant rooms stay lukewarm.

Balancing controls how much hot water flows to each radiator so that ones near the boiler don't hog the heat while distant rooms stay lukewarm. It's a proper, methodical job rather than a quick tweak.

Why unbalanced systems happen

Radiators closest to the boiler naturally get hot water first and most easily, leaving further rooms starved of flow unless the lockshield valves are set to compensate.

How the process works

Each radiator's lockshield valve is adjusted in sequence, checking the temperature difference across the flow and return with a thermometer, working from the boiler outward.

Why it's worth doing properly

A correctly balanced system heats every room to schedule, rather than making the boiler work harder to compensate for one starved radiator.

Signs your system needs balancing

  • Radiators nearest the boiler always get hot first and hottest
  • Rooms further from the boiler stay noticeably cooler
  • Heating takes a long time to reach rooms at the far end of the house

Questions we get asked

Can I balance radiators myself?

It's possible with a thermometer and patience, but getting it wrong can just move the imbalance elsewhere rather than fix it.

Does balancing need special tools?

A basic clamp thermometer helps get an accurate result rather than guessing by touch.

How often does a system need rebalancing?

Rarely, unless radiators have been added, removed or replaced since the last balance.
