PCB Control Boards: The Boiler's Brain

The printed circuit board manages every sequence in the boiler — ignition timing, pump control, safety interlocks and the fault codes on the display.

The printed circuit board manages every sequence in the boiler — ignition timing, pump control, safety interlocks and the fault codes on the display. A faulty PCB can produce almost any symptom, which is why it's usually diagnosed by ruling other components out first, not assumed straight away.

What it does

It reads sensor inputs, drives the fan, pump, valves and ignition in the correct sequence, and enforces the safety checks between each step.

How it fails

Component failure from age or heat, condensate ingress into the casing, or a power surge can damage tracks or components on the board.

Repair or replace

Modern boiler PCBs are not economically repaired at component level; a faulty board is replaced as a unit and reconfigured to the boiler's settings.

Questions we get asked

Is PCB replacement Gas Safe-only work?

Yes, replacing and recommissioning a boiler's control board is Gas Safe registered work.

Why would you check other parts before blaming the PCB?

Because a faulty sensor or switch elsewhere can produce symptoms that look exactly like a board fault, and replacing the board wouldn't fix the actual cause.

Does a new PCB need reprogramming?

Yes, boiler-specific settings and sometimes model-specific software need setting correctly during commissioning.
