Shower Valve Problems: Temperature Swings, Weak Flow and Drips

Shower complaints usually get blamed on the shower head, when the cause is nearly always the valve, the cartridge inside it, or the water system feeding it. A thermostatic valve in particular is a safety device as much as a comfort one, and when it starts behaving oddly it is telling you something specific about scale, pressure balance or a failing cartridge.

How a thermostatic valve is meant to behave

Inside the valve, a temperature-sensitive element continuously adjusts the blend of hot and cold to hold the temperature you set, and shuts the flow down if the cold supply fails so you are not scalded. That is why it reacts when a toilet is flushed elsewhere, and why it will cut out rather than run hot. A valve that no longer reacts, or that runs cold suddenly, has usually lost that element's function through scale or wear.

Temperature that swings or drifts

Sudden cold when another outlet is used points at pressure imbalance between hot and cold supplies rather than the valve itself, common where a mains cold meets a gravity hot. Gradual drift, where the same setting gets cooler over months, is typically scale on the thermostatic element. A valve that will not reach a hot temperature at all can be a cartridge failure, but check first that the cylinder or boiler is actually delivering hot water at the expected temperature.

Weak flow from the shower

Start at the head: a scaled head or a blocked flow restrictor is the most common and easiest cause. Then the hose, which can collapse internally. Then the valve's inlet filters, which are small gauze screens that catch debris and are routinely overlooked. Only after those does it become a supply question — inadequate flow rate, an undersized pump, or a combi delivering to its rated output rather than to your expectations.

Dripping after the shower is turned off

A little residual drainage from the head after use is normal, as the hose and head empty. Continuous dripping hours later is a cartridge that is no longer sealing, and is worth fixing because the constant flow scales the head and stains the tray. On a mixer valve, the drip can also mean debris has scored the ceramic discs, in which case the cartridge is replaced rather than cleaned.

Matching the valve to the system

Valves are specified for particular pressure ranges. A low-pressure valve on a mains-pressure system, or a high-pressure valve on a gravity system, will disappoint no matter how good the product is. Pumped gravity systems need the pump correctly sized and positioned. Electric showers sidestep the hot supply entirely but are limited by their kW rating and by incoming cold flow, which is why they feel weaker in winter.

Repair or replace

Cartridges are replaceable on most decent valves, and where the brand and model are identifiable that is usually the sensible fix. Replacement makes more sense where the valve body is corroded, the brand is unidentifiable or obsolete, the valve is the wrong specification for the system, or the tiling is coming off anyway as part of other work. Concealed valves are the awkward case, since access can be limited, which is a good argument for choosing a serviceable model in the first place. Photographing the valve body, any markings on the escutcheon and the cartridge itself before ordering saves a wasted trip, because visually identical valves from the same brand often use different internals across model years. Where the make genuinely cannot be identified, replacing the valve with a serviceable, well-supported model is usually cheaper over time than chasing an unobtainable part.

Why does my shower go cold when a tap runs?

Usually a pressure imbalance between the hot and cold supplies. A thermostatic valve reacts by cutting back to protect you rather than running hot.

Can a thermostatic cartridge be descaled?

Sometimes, with limited success. Where scale has affected the element's response, replacing the cartridge is generally more reliable.

Why is my electric shower weaker in winter?

Incoming water is colder, so the same kW rating heats fewer litres per minute to the same temperature. It is the rating, not a fault.

Is a dripping shower valve urgent?

Not urgent, but worth fixing. Continuous flow scales the head, marks the tray and wastes water you may be metered for.

Do I need a pump for my shower?

Only on a gravity-fed system with insufficient head. Pumping a mains supply is not permitted and will not solve a mains flow problem.
