Here's the honest framework we use: a repair is good value when the appliance is otherwise sound, parts are available, and the fault is not a symptom of a broader failure. It stops being good value when you're funding a sequence of repairs on an appliance approaching the end of its service life.
Age and parts availability
Manufacturers support parts for a finite period. Once a boiler reaches the point where components are obsolete or only available second-hand, every future breakdown becomes a longer outage. That, more than the repair price, is usually what makes an old boiler impractical.
What kind of fault is it?
A diverter valve, a pump or a sensor is a contained repair on almost any age of boiler. A failed heat exchanger or a corroded main body is different — those are high-value components, and on an older appliance the repair can approach a meaningful share of replacement cost with none of the guarantee.
Repair history matters more than a single price
Two call-outs in a year on the same appliance predicts a third. We look at what's been replaced already, because a boiler that's had several components renewed is telling you something about its overall condition.
Efficiency and comfort, honestly
A new condensing boiler with correct controls will use less gas than a tired old one, but the size of that saving depends on what you're replacing and how the system is set up. We'd rather give you a realistic expectation than an inflated payback figure — and where a repair is genuinely the better spend, we'll say so.

How long should a boiler last?
It varies with make, installation quality, water condition and servicing history. A well-maintained modern boiler on a clean system lasts considerably longer than a neglected one, which is the strongest argument for annual servicing.
Can I spread the cost of a replacement?

Do I need to replace radiators at the same time?
Usually not. The system does need cleaning before a new boiler goes on, and we'll flag any individual radiator that's corroded or badly undersized rather than replacing everything as a matter of course.
