Honest comparison

Comparing combi boilers honestly — without a fake top ten

There is no single best combi boiler. There is a best combi boiler for your mains flow, your radiator load and how long you plan to stay.

Ranked lists of boilers are mostly editorial fiction. The same appliance can be the right answer in one house and the wrong one next door, because the variables that matter — incoming flow rate, heat loss, flue route, parts availability locally — belong to the property rather than the product.

What can be compared honestly is the specification sheet. Below are the figures worth putting side by side, and the marketing lines worth discounting. We are a Worcester Bosch accredited installer, which is the only manufacturer accreditation we hold; we fit and work on other makes too, and nothing here is a paid endorsement.

Six specifications that genuinely differentiate combis

Everything else on a brochure is largely presentation.

  • Domestic hot water flow rate at a stated temperature rise — usually 35°C. A flow rate quoted at 30°C rise looks better and means less.
  • Minimum modulated output. A boiler that can turn down to 3–4kW will run steadily in mild weather instead of firing and stopping.
  • Heat exchanger material and construction — stainless steel versus aluminium alloy affects tolerance of poor water quality.
  • Warranty length and its conditions: filter fitted, annual service, accredited installer requirements.
  • Physical size and connection layout, which decides whether it fits the existing cupboard and pipe centres.
  • Parts commonality. A boiler whose diverter valve and PCB are stocked by every local merchant is a cheaper boiler to own.

How to read a shortlist properly

Fill this in for two or three models with your own figures rather than trusting a league table.

What to compareWhere the number comes fromWhat good looks like
Usable hot water flowYour measured mains flow, capped by the boiler's rating at 35°C riseBoiler rating close to but not far above your measured mains flow
Turn-down ratioMax output divided by minimum output on the datasheetThe wider the better for a well-insulated house
Warranty conditionsManufacturer terms, not the retailer's headlineAchievable in practice: filter, annual service, correct installer status
Controls compatibilityWhether it supports weather compensation or open protocolsNative support, so future controls are not locked out

Why flow rate claims mislead

A combi's advertised litres-per-minute figure describes what the appliance can heat, not what your street can deliver. If your kitchen tap gives twelve litres a minute, a boiler advertised at sixteen will still give you twelve — and the extra capacity is money spent on nothing.

It is also quoted at a temperature rise. The same unit will show a higher figure at 30°C rise than at 35°C, and 30°C rise on a cold January main is not a comfortable shower. Compare like with like or the numbers are meaningless.

Common shortlisting dilemmas

Premium brand or longer warranty on a mid brand?
Warranty terms are only as good as your ability to meet them. A ten-year warranty that requires an annual service is excellent if you will book one every year, and worthless if you will not.
Is a bigger output safer?
No. Oversizing is the most common specification error in UK homes. It causes short-cycling, which wears ignition and fan components and wastes gas in mild weather.
Does the badge affect resale?
Buyers notice a recognised brand and a serviced, documented installation. Of the two, the paperwork trail tends to reassure more.

Questions people ask

Who decides what counts as the best combi boiler?

In most published lists, an editor with an affiliate link. The defensible version of the question is which shortlisted model suits your measured mains flow, your heat loss and your cupboard space.

Should I choose on efficiency percentages?

No. Modern condensing combis cluster within a point or two of each other on paper. Real-world efficiency is decided by sizing, controls and system cleanliness, not by the datasheet figure.

Do longer warranties mean a more reliable boiler?

They signal manufacturer confidence and a parts network, but they are conditional. Read what the warranty requires of you before treating its length as a quality score.

Is it worth paying more for a quieter boiler?

In a kitchen or a cupboard next to a bedroom, yes — sound power figures differ noticeably between tiers. In a garage or utility room it rarely justifies the premium.

Treat any article that hands you a numbered winner with suspicion, including this one if it had. The honest version of the question is narrower and more useful: which of these two boilers suits this house, at this flow rate, for the years I intend to stay?
