Once a home needs cooling in more than one room, the design question arrives immediately: give each room its own outdoor unit, or run several indoor units from one shared condenser?
Both are proper engineering solutions. The trade-offs are about redundancy, part-load efficiency, outdoor space and how much pipework has to converge on a single point.
The honest trade-offs
Separate splits
One indoor unit paired with its own outdoor unit.
- Each system runs independently at its own efficiency
- A fault takes out one room, not all of them
- Short pipe runs — each unit goes to its nearest wall
- Needs space and an acceptable position for every outdoor unit
Multi-split
Two to five indoor units sharing one outdoor unit.
- One outdoor unit, one external position, one power supply
- Much better where boundaries, patios or lease terms limit external kit
- All pipe runs must reach the single condenser location
- One outdoor fault affects every connected room
The part-load question people miss
A multi-split condenser is sized for the combined load of its indoor units, but most of the time only one room is calling. The unit then runs well below its design capacity, and while modern inverter compressors handle that far better than older equipment, a dedicated split serving one room will usually be operating closer to its sweet spot.
Where all the rooms tend to be used together — an open-plan floor, or a family cooling bedrooms simultaneously overnight — that argument largely evaporates and multi-split looks strong.

Design details to nail down before ordering
- Maximum permitted pipe run and height difference for the chosen equipment
- Whether every indoor unit can reach the single outdoor position sensibly
- Whether the multi-split range offers the indoor formats you want in each room
- Combination limits — how many indoor units the condenser genuinely supports
- Electrical supply capacity at the chosen outdoor position
- Service access, remembering one unit now carries several rooms
Decide it on outdoor space and usage pattern, in that order. If there is only one place a condenser can go, the answer is made for you; if there are several, ask whether the rooms are used together or apart.
