What it does
A synchronous motor inside the actuator head turns a cam or gear that opens or closes the valve it's fitted to, then reports its position back via an internal microswitch.
How it fails
The motor's gears wear out from repeated cycling, the microswitch fails to register the valve's true position, or age makes the head simply seize.
Repair or replace
Actuator heads are designed to be swapped independently of the valve body they sit on, which makes this usually a quick, contained repair rather than a full valve replacement.

Is actuator replacement Gas Safe-only work?
It depends where the actuator sits — those integral to a gas boiler's own valves are Gas Safe registered work, while standalone circuit valves elsewhere are heating-circuit work.
Can I replace an actuator head myself?
It's mechanically simple, but usually involves isolating the system and some water loss, so we'd recommend having it done by an engineer.
How long do actuators typically last?
