Electric Boilers: Where They Genuinely Fit

An electric boiler has no flue, no gas and very few moving parts, which makes it attractive in flats and in buildings where a flue is impossible.

An electric boiler has no flue, no gas and very few moving parts, which makes it attractive in flats and in buildings where a flue is impossible. The catch is electrical capacity and the unit cost of electricity against gas.

The electrical side is the real design job

Supply capacity, cable size, dedicated protection and, on larger outputs, whether the incoming service can carry it at all.

Sizing behaves differently

You cannot lean on a big burner for a quick recovery. Output is what it is, so cylinder sizing and heating schedules matter far more.

Where they shine

Small well-insulated flats, annexes, and properties with no gas where a heat pump cannot be sited.

Questions we get asked

Are electric boilers 100% efficient?

At the appliance, close to it. That is not the same as being cheap to run, because it takes no account of the unit price of electricity.

Do they need a flue or annual gas safety check?

No flue and no gas check, though the system and any cylinder still need attention.

Can an electric boiler run a whole house?

Only where the heat loss is modest and the electrical supply supports the output required.
