Gas Supply Pipework and Why Sizing Matters

A boiler can only burn what the pipe delivers.

A boiler can only burn what the pipe delivers. If the gas pipe from the meter is undersized, the appliance drops pressure under load and behaves like it has a fault when the real problem is upstream.

Working gas pressure

Tested at the appliance with everything running. A drop beyond the permitted allowance across the installation means the pipework, not the boiler, needs attention.

Why old houses catch people out

A 15mm run that was fine for an old low-output appliance will not feed a modern high-output combi plus a hob.

What upgrading involves

Running a larger pipe from the meter on the shortest practical route, with correct protection, support and sleeving where it passes through structure.

Questions we get asked

Can the boiler be fitted anyway?

No. A responsible installation includes the gas rate and working pressure check, and if it fails the pipework must be corrected.

Is this an expensive add-on?

It depends entirely on the route. We identify it at survey rather than on install day, so there are no surprises.

Who is allowed to do this work?

Gas Safe registered engineers only. Our registration number is 554328.
