Combi Boiler Problems: The Faults That Actually Come Up

Knowing which symptoms point at the diverter valve, which point at the plate heat exchanger and which point at the sealed system as a whole makes the difference between a targeted repair and an expensive guess.

Heating works but hot water does not

This is the classic diverter valve symptom. The valve directs flow to either the radiators or the hot water plate exchanger, and when it sticks in the heating position the taps stay cold while the radiators are fine. Sometimes the valve body is fine and the actuator motor has failed; sometimes the valve is jammed with debris from a dirty system. Either way, the fix is a specific component, and diagnosing which one saves replacing both.

Hot water that runs hot and cold

Fluctuating hot water usually means the plate heat exchanger is furring up with limescale or blocking with sludge, so it cannot transfer heat consistently at the flow rate you are drawing. Hard water areas see this sooner. It can also be a flow sensor that is misreading, or an incoming flow rate too low to trigger the boiler reliably. If the boiler fires and drops out repeatedly while a tap runs, that pattern points at flow rather than heat.

Losing pressure repeatedly

A sealed system holds a fixed volume, so pressure that keeps dropping means water is leaving somewhere. The candidates are a leak on the pipework or a radiator, a passing pressure relief valve dumping water to the outside discharge, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge so the system over-pressurises when hot and vents. Topping it up weekly hides the fault and, worse, introduces fresh oxygenated water each time, which accelerates corrosion.

Locking out and needing a reset

Repeated lockouts are the boiler protecting itself. Common causes are a blocked or frozen condensate, poor flow through the heat exchanger from sludge or a tired pump, an ignition or flame sensing fault, or a flue or air pressure switch problem. Resetting a boiler more than once or twice is not a fix — it clears the symptom while whatever triggered it continues. The fault code history is genuinely useful here and is one of the first things an engineer reads.

Noise: kettling, whooshing and banging

Kettling is the sound of localised boiling inside a scaled or sludged heat exchanger and always warrants attention, because it means the exchanger is running hotter than intended. Whooshing at ignition can be a burner or gas pressure issue. Banging on shutdown can be expansion or a delayed ignition. None of these are appliances 'just being noisy' — each maps to a specific check an engineer can carry out.

The system, not just the boiler

Combi boilers have narrow waterways and are unforgiving of poor system water. A magnetic filter, correct inhibitor levels and a proper clean before a new boiler goes on an old system are what keep heat exchangers and pumps alive. A large share of the repeat repairs we see on combis are system water problems presenting as component failures.

Is it worth repairing a diverter valve or replacing the boiler?

On a boiler that is otherwise sound and still supported with parts, a diverter valve repair is usually sensible. On an older appliance with other faults, it is a good moment to weigh replacement.

Why does my boiler lose pressure only in winter?

Heating runs harder, so any weeping joint or passing relief valve loses more water. It also unmasks an expansion vessel problem that summer use never stresses.

How often should I top up the pressure?

Rarely — an occasional top-up after maintenance is normal. Needing it weekly or monthly means something is leaking and needs finding.

Does hard water damage a combi?

It scales the plate heat exchanger over time, which shows up as fluctuating hot water. Scale reduction measures help in hard water areas.

Can I clear a blocked condensate myself?

If the frozen section is the accessible external pipe, warm water poured over it often clears it. Anything internal, or a blockage that keeps returning, needs an engineer.
