Radiator Problems Explained: Cold Spots, Noise, Leaks and Cold Rooms

Radiators are simple objects, which is exactly why the fault is usually somewhere else. A radiator that will not heat properly is telling you something about air in the system, sludge in the bottom of the emitter, a valve that is not opening, or a system that has never been balanced. Reading the pattern — which part of the radiator is cold, and which radiators in the house are affected — narrows the cause down quickly.

Cold at the top, cold at the bottom, cold all over

Cold at the top with a warm bottom is air, and bleeding usually fixes it. Cold at the bottom with a warm top is sludge and debris settled in the base of the radiator, which bleeding will never touch — that needs the radiator flushing or the system cleaning. Cold all over while other radiators are hot points at the valves: a seized thermostatic head, a lockshield closed down too far, or an unpowered zone. Every radiator cold points at the boiler, pump or controls rather than the radiators at all.

Why the furthest radiator is always the coldest

Water takes the path of least resistance, so radiators nearest the pump get flow easily and distant ones get whatever is left. Balancing sets each radiator's lockshield valve so the flow is shared according to what each emitter actually needs. It is a slow, methodical job done with a thermometer on the flow and return of each radiator rather than by feel, and it is the single most common thing missing from a system that heats unevenly.

Noise and what it tells you

Gurgling is air moving with the water and points at trapped air or a system drawing air in through a leaking joint or a failing automatic air vent. Ticking as the heating comes on and goes off is expansion, usually a pipe rubbing where it passes through a joist or floorboard, and is harmless but fixable. Banging and hammering when a valve closes is water hammer, usually a pressure or fixing issue rather than a radiator one. Kettling noise from the boiler with hot radiators is a system water quality problem.

Thermostatic radiator valves that stop working

TRV heads stick, especially in summer when they sit unmoved for months. The pin under the head seizes in its closed position and the radiator stays cold even with the head turned fully up. Removing the head and gently freeing the pin often restores it. A TRV is a room temperature control, not an on-off tap, and it should never be fitted in the same room as the main thermostat, because the two fight each other and short-cycle the boiler.

Leaks at valves, unions and the radiator body

Weeping valve spindles can often be re-packed rather than replaced. Union nuts loosen with expansion and can be nipped up carefully. Pinholes in the radiator body itself mean internal corrosion, and a radiator that has corroded through is a radiator to replace, not repair — patching it just moves the next pinhole a few inches. Corrosion through the body is also a signal to check inhibitor levels across the whole system.

When the radiators are the wrong answer entirely

If a room has never been warm enough, the radiator may simply be undersized for the heat loss of that room, especially after an extension, a conversion or new glazing. Adding a bigger emitter is a calculation, not a guess, and it has to be checked against the boiler and pipework's ability to supply it. Replacing radiators without replacing the boiler is perfectly possible when the sizing is done properly.

How often should radiators need bleeding?

Occasionally is normal. Repeatedly is not — a system that keeps making air is drawing it in somewhere, or the automatic air vent or expansion vessel needs looking at.

Will bleeding fix a radiator that's cold at the bottom?

No. Cold at the bottom is settled sludge, and the fix is flushing the radiator or cleaning the system, not releasing air from the top.

Should I fit a TRV in the room with the thermostat?

No. The TRV closes the radiator while the thermostat still calls for heat, which makes the boiler cycle and the room control worse rather than better.

Can I add a radiator to an existing system?

Often yes, but it needs checking against the boiler output, pipe sizes and the heat loss of the room, otherwise you weaken the rest of the circuit.

Is a cold radiator ever a boiler fault?

If every radiator is cold, very likely — pump, diverter valve, zone valve or controls. A single cold radiator with hot neighbours is almost never the boiler.
