These are often presented as alternatives when they do different jobs. An annual service is preventative work on the appliance and the system. A cover plan is insurance against the cost of a failure. Understanding what each one actually delivers — and what the exclusions usually are — makes the decision much simpler.
What a proper annual service includes
Combustion analysis, gas working pressure, checks of seals, condensate, expansion vessel charge, system pressure behaviour, safety device operation, and the condition of the magnetic filter and inhibitor. That last part matters: a service that never looks at system water misses the cause of most heat exchanger failures.
What cover plans typically don't include
Terms vary, but exclusions commonly include pre-existing faults, systems deemed inadequately maintained, sludge-related damage, and appliances above a certain age. Excesses and first-year waiting periods are usual. None of that makes cover bad value — it just means the small print determines whether it's worth it for your appliance.
Guarantees on newer boilers
If your boiler is within its manufacturer guarantee, you may already be covered for parts and labour on the appliance — provided it has been serviced annually as required. In that case paying separately for breakdown cover on the same appliance can duplicate what you already have.
Our view
Service every boiler annually without exception, keep the system water protected, and then decide on cover based on the appliance's age and your appetite for an unexpected bill. We don't sell cover plans, so this is genuinely a decision we have no stake in.

Does servicing keep my boiler guarantee valid?
For most manufacturers, yes — annual servicing by a competent registered engineer is a condition of the guarantee. Keep the records.
Do you offer breakdown cover?
No. We carry out servicing and repairs on a job-by-job basis, and we're happy to say when a cover plan might suit someone better than paying per repair.
How long does an annual service take?
Enough time to test properly rather than glance at the appliance — combustion analysis, safety checks and system water condition all take time to do correctly.
Can you service a boiler you didn't install?
Yes, any make. We're a Worcester Bosch accredited installer but we service and repair across brands.
