How each one works
A combi heats water instantaneously as it flows through the boiler, so there's no cylinder and no cold tank. A system boiler heats a stored cylinder of hot water, which is then available at mains pressure if the cylinder is unvented. The combi wins on space and standing losses; the cylinder wins on simultaneous demand.
Mains flow rate is the deciding number
A combi can only deliver hot water as fast as your mains supplies cold water. If flow rate is modest, a powerful combi cannot fix that — the shower will still be weak. We measure flow in litres per minute at the property before recommending, because this is where most disappointing installations begin.
Simultaneous demand
Two showers at once, or a shower plus a bath fill, will noticeably challenge most combis. A stored cylinder handles it easily until the stored volume runs out, then needs reheat time. Households with teenagers or multiple bathrooms usually prefer the cylinder for that reason.
Space, cost and practical trade-offs
Combis free the airing cupboard and loft tank space entirely, and installation is generally simpler on a like-for-like swap. System boilers need cylinder space and, if unvented, a discharge route and annual attention to the cylinder's safety devices. Both are efficient modern appliances; the choice is about your household's water demand, not the boiler's quality.

Output should be matched to hot water demand and heat loss, not simply increased for headroom. Oversizing causes short cycling, which wears components and wastes gas.
