What we offer

Designer radiators let you treat heating as part of the room's design: tall vertical panels for narrow walls, traditional column radiators for period homes, or flat-fronted styles for a modern look. The catch is that appearance and heat output do not always go together. A striking radiator that cannot warm the room is a poor buy, so we start with what the room needs and then find a style that delivers it.

We supply and fit designer and column radiators on wet central heating systems. John The Plumb is Gas Safe registered (554328) and a Worcester Bosch accredited installer. A free in-home survey checks output, positions and pipework, and you receive a fixed price in writing. For standard panel radiator swaps, see our radiator replacement page.

Start with heat output

Every radiator has a rated heat output, and the room has a heat requirement based on its size, windows and outside walls. Designer radiators can have lower output than a standard double panel of the same size, so a like-for-like width swap may leave a room cooler. We work out what each room needs and check the chosen radiator against it, adjusting size, number of columns or height where necessary.

Column radiators

Column radiators suit period properties and anyone who wants a traditional look. Output increases with the number of columns and the height, so a two-column radiator gives less heat than a four-column one of the same length. They are heavy when full, so wall or floor fixings matter, and some designs stand on feet. Their depth also needs checking against window sills and furniture.

Vertical and flat-panel styles

Tall vertical radiators make use of narrow walls beside doors or in alcoves, freeing space under windows. Flat-fronted panels give a clean modern finish. Both come in a range of finishes. Vertical radiators often need pipework moved, because their connections sit in a different place from the old horizontal radiator.

Materials in general terms

Steel is the most common material and offers the widest range of styles. Aluminium heats up and cools down quickly and is lighter on the wall. Cast iron holds heat for longer and suits traditional interiors, but is very heavy. Each behaves a little differently, and we can talk through how that fits the way you use the room.

Valves and fitting

Designer radiators deserve matching valves, and thermostatic valves let each room find its own temperature. Before new radiators go on, we look at the condition of the system water; sludge from an old system will settle in a new radiator. Where needed, the system is flushed, and a magnetic filter is fitted as standard on our heating work. Once installed, the system is balanced so every radiator heats evenly.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do designer radiators give out less heat?+

Some styles do, compared with a standard double panel of the same size. We check each radiator's rated output against what the room needs before you choose.

Can column radiators go on my existing heating system?+

Yes, on a wet central heating system. The survey checks the pipework positions and whether the system needs cleaning first.

Will you supply the radiators?+

Yes. We supply and fit designer and column radiators, and can talk through styles and sizes at the survey.
