What we offer

Radiator replacement is often the simplest way to make a cold room comfortable or tidy up a tired heating system without changing the boiler. Swapping an old panel for a new one, moving a radiator to a better wall or adding one to a room that never had enough heat all need the same thing: a radiator chosen for the room and a system that is balanced once the work is done.

John The Plumb fits new radiators on existing wet central heating systems across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire. We are Gas Safe registered (554328) and a Worcester Bosch accredited installer, so radiator work can be planned on its own or alongside a new boiler. Every job starts with a free in-home survey and a fixed price in writing.

Radiator replacement and installation

Choosing the right radiator for each room

A new radiator should match the heat the room actually needs, not just the gap left by the old one. Room size, the number of outside walls, window area and how the space is used all affect the output required. A larger or double-panel radiator can sometimes fit the same width as the old one while giving noticeably more warmth. Style matters too: we can talk through compact panels, tall column designs for narrow walls and towel rails, then check that the chosen model gives enough output for the room.

Moving or adding a radiator

Sometimes the best fix is a different position. A radiator hidden behind a sofa, or one sitting on an inside wall while the window wall stays cold, can be moved during a refurbishment. Adding a radiator to an extension or a converted room means extending the pipework from the existing circuit and checking the boiler has capacity for the extra load. The survey looks at the pipe routes, floor construction and where new pipework can run neatly, so you know how visible it will be before work starts.

Valves, TRVs and controls

New radiators are usually fitted with new valves rather than reusing worn ones. Thermostatic radiator valves let each room settle at its own temperature, which is useful in bedrooms and rooms that pick up sun during the day. One radiator, normally where the main thermostat is, often stays on a plain valve so the system always has somewhere to circulate. If you are also thinking about smart heating controls, it makes sense to plan them at the same time as the radiator work.

Flushing and balancing after the fit

A new radiator connected to dirty system water will not perform as it should. Where sludge is present, cleaning the system is discussed as part of the job, and a power flush may be recommended on older circuits. Magnetic system filters are fitted as standard on our heating work. Once the radiators are in, the system is balanced so that water reaches every radiator at the right rate; without this, rooms nearest the boiler warm quickly while those furthest away lag behind.

Radiators alongside a new boiler

If the boiler is due for replacement, doing the radiator work at the same visit avoids draining and refilling the system twice. A new condensing boiler works best when the radiators are sized to deliver enough heat at lower flow temperatures, so the survey can look at both together. That said, plenty of homes keep their boiler and simply replace a few radiators. What affects the cost is mainly the number of radiators, their size and style, whether any are being moved and how much pipework is involved.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace radiators without replacing the boiler?+

Yes. Radiators can be replaced on an existing working system. We check the boiler and pipework during the survey so the new radiators suit what is already there.

How long does it take to fit a new radiator?+

A straightforward like-for-like swap is a small job. Moving radiators, adding new ones or replacing several at once takes longer because the system has to be drained, altered, refilled and balanced. We give you a schedule with the quote.

What affects the cost of replacing a radiator?+

The number of radiators, their size and style, the valves chosen, any pipework changes for a new position and whether the system needs cleaning first. The free survey gives you a fixed price in writing.
