Why one hall thermostat causes so many problems
Hallways are unrepresentative. They have the front door, the stairs pulling warm air upward, and no sustained occupancy. A thermostat there is measuring the least comfortable and most disturbed air in the building, then making decisions for every room.
The result is familiar: bedrooms too warm, the room you actually sit in never quite right, and the boiler cycling in response to a draught rather than to genuine demand. Relocating the sensing point, or moving to zone control, addresses the cause instead of chasing symptoms with radiator valves.

Weather compensation, in plain terms
- An outdoor sensor measures the actual outside temperature
- The boiler calculates the flow temperature the house needs today, rather than always sending water out at maximum
- In mild weather it may send water out far cooler, and run for longer at low output
- Lower return temperatures mean the boiler condenses more, which is where its efficiency actually comes from
- Rooms hold a steadier temperature, because heat is delivered continuously rather than in bursts
- It requires a compatible boiler and control, so it is a specification decision rather than a retro-fit afterthought
