Search for the cost of flushing a radiator and you will find numbers everywhere, and they rarely agree. That is not because anyone is hiding something. It is because "flushing" describes several different jobs, and the one your system needs depends on how much sludge is in it and where.
This guide deliberately does not quote figures. What it does is explain the handful of factors that decide the price, so that when you get quotes you can see why they differ and whether they are describing the same work.

Which method
A single radiator taken off and hosed through is a small job. A chemical clean circulated through the whole system takes longer. A full power flush with a dedicated pump machine takes longest and involves the most equipment.

Whole-system work scales with the number of radiators, towel rails and circuits, because each is worked through in turn.

How bad the sludge is
A system that has run for years with no inhibitor and regular top-ups can need repeated passes before the water runs clear.

State of the valves
Seized or weeping radiator valves often show up once the system is drained, and replacing them adds parts and time.

Filter and inhibitor
A clean without a magnetic filter and fresh inhibitor afterwards is a short-lived clean. Adding them is part of doing the job properly.

Open-vented systems with loft tanks and sealed systems are cleaned differently, and very old microbore pipework may not suit aggressive flushing at all.

Comparing quotes fairly
When quotes differ, check they describe the same method, the same number of radiators and whether a magnetic filter and inhibitor are included. One quote may be for rinsing a radiator in the garden; another may be for a full machine clean with a filter fitted. Both are called flushing.
It is also worth asking how the installer decides when the system is clean. Water clarity, inhibitor readings and heat across each radiator are all reasonable answers.
Questions people ask
Is flushing one radiator a DIY job?
On a simple system, removing a radiator, taking it outside and running a hose through it is a job many confident homeowners do. You need to isolate it, catch the dirty water and refill and bleed afterwards. On a sealed system you also need to re-pressurise correctly.
How do I know if my whole system needs flushing?
Several radiators cold at the bottom, dark water when bleeding, noisy pipes or a boiler that kettles all point to sludge spread through the system rather than in one radiator.
Is a power flush always necessary?

Does flushing stop the problem coming back?
Only if the cause is dealt with too — a magnetic filter to catch new debris, the right inhibitor level and no ongoing leak forcing regular top-ups.
