What we offer

Loft air conditioning needs a design that works with the shape of a roof-level room. Sloping ceilings, low walls and dormers can limit the places available for an indoor unit, while the outdoor unit may be some distance away. A split system can cool the loft in summer and heat it in winter, but its position and connecting routes deserve as much attention as the choice of equipment.

We install single-split, multi-split and ducted air conditioning, with a free in-home design and quote. John The Plumb is REFCOM registered for F-Gas work. For an existing loft conversion, we look at the finished room and possible routes; for a conversion still being planned, it helps to discuss those routes before the walls and ceilings are closed up.

Why the room under the roof feels different

Roof windows, sun on the roof and the room's position at the top of the house can all affect summer comfort. The balance varies with glazing, shading, insulation and how the space is ventilated. Describe when heat builds up and whether the loft is a bedroom, office or occasional room. Air conditioning addresses the room temperature, while those other features remain relevant to the design. The survey considers the actual loft rather than treating it as an ordinary bedroom with a different address.

Knee walls, dormers and usable mounting space

A low knee wall may not give a wall-mounted unit the clearance or airflow it needs. A dormer wall can offer a different position, but windows, furniture and the room's proportions still matter. We look for a place where the proposed unit can distribute air into the occupied space without being obstructed by the roof slope. If wall space is limited, discuss the available system formats during the survey instead of choosing a location solely because it hides the equipment.

Follow the pipe route before agreeing the unit

The connecting pipework must reach an outdoor unit, and the route may pass through or around the roof space. Consider access, finished surfaces and the appearance of any external run. An apparently convenient indoor wall could create a much less convenient route outside. If you have drawings for a conversion, they can help show where walls, storage and services will sit. For a completed room, the survey looks at workable routes with the finishes already in place.

Drainage at roof level

Cooling produces condensate at the indoor unit, so the installation needs an agreed drainage route as well as refrigerant pipes. The height of a loft does not by itself guarantee a suitable drain path. Changes in level, internal obstructions and the proposed termination all need to be considered. Discuss drainage alongside the unit position so it is not left as an afterthought. The written quote should reflect the route and any arrangements required by the chosen layout.

Connect the loft to the wider plan

If the loft is the only room needing air conditioning, a single split is an option to assess. If you also want other rooms covered, the loft can form part of a multi-split design rather than being planned in isolation. Outdoor siting needs to consider pipe routes, access, nearby windows and any permissions. The installation is then fitted, tested and commissioned, with the heating and cooling controls explained at handover. Review our loft-conversion page for the wider heating choices before deciding what the room needs.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Why does my loft conversion get so hot?+

Sun through roof glazing, heat reaching the roof and the way the space is insulated and ventilated can contribute. The survey looks at those room features when planning air conditioning rather than relying only on floor area.

Where does the outdoor unit go for a loft room?+

It does not have to sit beside the loft window. A suitable location is considered together with pipe length, access, drainage, neighbouring windows and permissions. The survey establishes which position works for your property.

Can air conditioning heat a loft office too?+

Yes. The split air conditioning systems we install are air-to-air heat pumps, providing heating as well as cooling to the room served by the indoor unit.
