If you are resetting daily, the appliance is repeatedly detecting a condition it is designed to shut down for. Understanding which lockout you have makes the difference between a small part swap and a genuinely unsafe situation.
Ignition lockout
The boiler tries to light, fails to prove a flame within its permitted attempts, and locks out. Causes include a failed ignition lead or electrode, a dirty or bridged flame sensing probe, a gas valve fault, or gas supply pressure that drops under load. Working pressure has to be measured at the appliance while it fires — a static reading tells you very little.
Overheat and circulation lockout
If flow through the heat exchanger is restricted, temperature spikes and the overheat thermostat cuts in. Sludge, a failing pump, a closed or seized valve, or air locking all produce this. It typically shows as a boiler that runs a few minutes, bangs or kettles, then stops.
Condensate and flue faults
A frozen or blocked condensate pipe backs water up into the boiler and triggers a lockout — very common on external condensate runs during a cold snap, and fixable permanently by re-routing internally or upsizing the pipe. Flue-related lockouts, including air pressure switch faults, must be treated seriously because they relate to combustion products.
When to stop resetting
If the boiler locks out repeatedly on the same code, stop resetting and get it looked at. Repeated ignition attempts on a faulty gas valve, or repeated overheat cycles, cause avoidable damage. If you smell gas or see soot staining around the case, turn the appliance off and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.

Is it safe to keep resetting my boiler?
Once or twice while you arrange a visit is generally fine. Repeatedly resetting a boiler that keeps locking out is not — the lockout exists to prevent an unsafe or damaging condition from continuing.
Why does my boiler lock out only when it's cold outside?
Almost always a frozen condensate pipe. Thawing it restores operation, but the permanent fix is re-routing the pipe internally or increasing its diameter and fall so it can't freeze again.
Can a fault code tell you the repair over the phone?
It narrows things usefully and helps us carry the right parts, but codes describe a symptom rather than a cause — an overheat code can be sludge, a pump or a valve. We confirm on site before quoting.
