They are reliable in the way old machinery is reliable — and profoundly inefficient, with parts increasingly hard to source. Replacing one is a bigger job than a straight combi swap, and knowing what's actually involved prevents nasty surprises mid-week.
What the job actually involves
The gas fire and boiler are removed from the chimney breast, the flue arrangement is dealt with and the chimney is usually lined or the opening sealed and ventilated appropriately. New pipework routes to wherever the replacement boiler will live, and the builder's opening is made good. It's a multi-day job in most properties, not a same-day swap.
Where the new boiler goes
Most customers move the boiler to the kitchen, a utility room or an airing cupboard, freeing the fireplace entirely. That choice affects pipework routing, flue position and condensate drainage, which is why a proper survey matters far more here than on a like-for-like replacement.
Combi or keep the cylinder?
Back boiler systems almost always come with a cold tank in the loft and a hot cylinder. Whether to go combi or to fit a system boiler with a modern unvented cylinder depends on how many bathrooms you have, simultaneous demand, and your incoming mains flow rate. We measure flow before recommending, because a combi on a poor mains supply disappoints every single time.
The efficiency difference
A back boiler is a non-condensing appliance with a permanently open flue. A modern condensing boiler recovers heat from flue gases and modulates its output to demand. Alongside the appliance change, we clean the existing system, fit a magnetic filter and add correct controls — the controls often make as much practical difference as the boiler itself.
Common questions
How long does a back boiler replacement take?
Typically several days rather than one, because of the removal, flue work, pipework re-routing and making good. We give you a realistic day count with the quote, and we don't leave a property without heating overnight unnecessarily.
Can I keep my gas fire?
Sometimes a decorative fire can be retained or replaced, depending on the flue arrangement after the boiler is removed. It has to be assessed on site — it isn't a decision that can be made from a photo.
Do I have to replace my radiators too?
Not usually. We clean the system and check each radiator's output against the room. Where a specific radiator is corroded or badly undersized we'll say so and price it separately, rather than including a blanket replacement.
