What the mid position means
The valve can send flow to heating, to hot water, or to both at once. That single component is doing three jobs, which is why its failure is so noticeable.
Classic symptom
Hot water when you only asked for heating, or radiators warming whenever the cylinder is heating — a valve stuck between positions.
Replacement options
Like-for-like head, whole valve, or converting the layout to S-Plan while the system is drained if zoning is wanted anyway.
