Daikin vs Mitsubishi Electric: choosing a home split system

Two of the best-known names in air conditioning, and both make excellent home systems. The better choice is usually decided by your rooms, not the logo.

Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric come up in almost every conversation about home air conditioning. Both are long-standing manufacturers with wide domestic ranges, both make inverter-driven split systems that heat and cool, and both are installed in homes across the UK. We fit both, along with Worcester Bosch, Panasonic and more, so we have no reason to push one over the other.

This guide compares them in the terms that actually help a homeowner decide, and suggests the questions worth asking when you get a quote.

What the two brands have in common

For most homes, the similarities matter more than the differences. Both brands offer wall-mounted indoor units in several sizes and styles, floor consoles for low walls, ducted units for concealed installations and multi-split outdoor units that serve several rooms. All of their current domestic split systems are air-to-air heat pumps, so they provide heating as well as cooling.

Both also offer app and Wi-Fi control, timers, sleep or quiet modes and filters on the indoor unit. If someone tells you one brand is simply better than the other across the board, treat that with caution.

Points to compare model by model

Rather than comparing brands in the abstract, compare the specific models proposed for your rooms on these points.

What to compareWhy it matters
Capacity optionsEach brand offers different steps in output; the closest match to your room is the one to look at
Indoor unit size and styleDepth, width and finish affect how the unit sits on your wall
Quoted sound levelsCompare the lowest fan speed figures for bedrooms, on a like-for-like basis
Controls and appTry the app or remote if you can; ease of use matters day to day
Multi-split combinationsWhich indoor units can share one outdoor unit, and how many
Manufacturer guarantee termsSet by each manufacturer and model, with their own conditions

Controls and apps

Both manufacturers have their own app for controlling units from a phone, with schedules and remote on and off. The interfaces differ, and personal preference plays a big part. If you have smart home equipment already, ask whether the proposed model works with it. Some people never use the app and rely on the handheld remote, so it is worth checking that too.

Multi-split systems

If you want several rooms covered, both brands offer multi-split outdoor units. The practical questions are how many indoor units each outdoor unit can serve, which indoor styles can be mixed on one system and how the outdoor unit fits the space outside. Sometimes two single splits suit a layout better than one multi-split, regardless of brand. The design visit is where this gets worked out.

Questions to ask at the survey

  • Which model and capacity are you proposing for each room, and why?
  • What is the quoted sound level at the lowest fan speed?
  • Can I see the app or remote for this model?
  • If I add a room later, can this outdoor unit take another indoor unit?
  • What are the manufacturer's guarantee terms for this model?
  • Is there an equivalent from the other brand, and how does it compare?
