Two-Zone Heating for Upstairs and Downstairs
Zoning splits the house so upstairs and downstairs can be heated to different temperatures at different times.
Zoning splits the house so upstairs and downstairs can be heated to different temperatures at different times. In a two-storey home it is one of the few control upgrades that changes how the house actually feels.
What is added
A second zone valve, a second room thermostat and wiring back to a wiring centre or a compatible programmer.
Why bedrooms are the winner
Most households want bedrooms cooler at night and warm for an hour in the morning — a schedule a single-zone system cannot express.
Pipework reality
The split has to exist hydraulically. In a house where the pipework interleaves floors, achieving a clean split is the real work.
Ask about zoning your home
Send us a photo of the valves near the cylinder or boiler and we will say whether a clean two-zone split is achievable.
Questions we get asked
Do I need smart thermostats to zone?
No. Conventional wired stats zone perfectly well; smart controls just add scheduling flexibility.
Will zoning save energy?
It usually reduces waste, though the size of the effect depends entirely on how the household lives.
Can you zone a single-pipe system?
Rarely in a satisfying way. Single-pipe circuits are better addressed by re-piping.
