Where the sludge comes from
Steel radiators and pipework corrode very slowly from the inside, producing fine magnetic debris that circulates with the heating water.
What the filter protects
Boiler heat exchangers and pumps have fine internal passages that sludge can block or abrade, so keeping it out reduces the chance of premature failure.
Maintenance the filter needs
The filter itself needs opening and cleaning out periodically, usually as part of an annual service, or it simply fills up and stops working.
